What it does
Adapalene is a synthetic retinoid that binds selectively to certain retinoid receptors, which gives it strong anti-acne activity with somewhat less irritation than older prescription retinoids. In much of the world it is available over the counter at 0.1%.
The adjustment period is real — expect dryness and possibly a purge for the first month or two — but it is the most evidence-backed option most people can buy for comedonal and inflammatory acne.
Unlike retinol it is stable in light and in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, which is why some clinicians are comfortable pairing the two where they would not pair benzoyl peroxide with retinol.

Layers well with
- Ceramides
- Niacinamide
- Moisturiser
Do not layer with
- Glycolic acid
- Salicylic acid
Same routine is fine for some pairs — same step is the problem. Split them morning and evening when in doubt.
